The owners of this beautiful Georgian fronted property in Burton Overy sort help from Leaf Architecture to look for visual options to relocate the family kitchen which was currently situated in the basement with no visual connection to the gardens. Being grade II listed this presented challenges in terms of impact on heritage assets so our approach often supported by conservation officers and Natural England was to create a simple contrasting contemporary design that maintained a distinction between old and new. The design evolved from looking to utilise a raised area of the lawn to one side of the property to partly cut in and conceal the extension with green sedum roof and a frameless glass link to the house. The resulting design which secured approval was a simple glazed elevation of large sliding doors within a black contrasting zinc surround with terraces cascading down to the head of the lawn, the landscaping being designed and installed by Second Nature Gardens.
